According to The Guardian, here are the 1000 novels that everyone must read.
Meanwhile, don’t forget about Entertainment Weekly’s top 100 “new” classics to be read (I have ready about 30 or so of these).
And then there are the 1001 books you must read before you die (which I have blogged about previously — only read about 250 or so from this list).
These lists are humbling. There is so much out there to read, and so little time in which to cram it all. Perhaps I should give up re-reading those I have already enjoyed. And also give up The New Yorker, New Scientist, Vanity Fair, The New York Times online, and….hm. Or maybe I should just pick one of these lists and try to make it through. Since I’m already 1/3 of the way through Entertainment Weekly’s selections, I could start with that one.
Then again, maybe I’ll create my own list, which might be a little more eclectic than those above. I’m not sure anyone else’s list would include Lucretius, Jasper Fforde, Agatha Christie, Carol Shields, Ford Maddox Ford, Jane Austen, Douglas Adams, Thomas Mann, Homer and Mikhail Bulgakov, to name a few. Or maybe they would. Who knows!
