20 weeks

It is hard to believe I’m already halfway through this pregnancy, but we have our 20-week ultrasound next week to determine/confirm that baby #2 is, in fact, a boy. Either way we’ll be happy, of course, but I’m relatively confident it is a boy. Most of the time I don’t really notice that I’m pregnant except when the baby is kicking me or I try to lie flat on my stomach or I realise that I am starving about 20 minutes after I’ve eaten. We’ve started telling Amelia that there is a baby in my tummy but so far she doesn’t seem very interested.

Today we went to the park to test out the Stonz boots I got for Amelia for the winter. It was quite warm, but wet, and there were plenty of puddles for Amelia to stomp through. She didn’t lay out into any of them like she did on the weekend (video of that one to come) but there were some very deep puddles and her boots ended up being soaked on the inside. I don’t think they were soaked through, but rather water seeped in from the top because I hadn’t done up the elastic too tightly. Amelia didn’t seem to mind and would happily have stayed splashing through the puddles for longer if I would have let her.

Out of the blue, Amelia has started using the “more” sign. We showed it to her a bunch of times back when we started doing signs, but it seemed too hard for her to coordinate both hands at once so we dropped it. Then, last week she asked for more by signing “more.” Now she uses it all the time, particularly if she is eating something she loves. She’s still got a great appetite and is willing to try almost anything. Today, for example, she had yogourt and granola and blueberries for breakfast, guacamole and carrots for a snack, chili and rice for lunch, raspberries for a snack and then pork, peas, corn and baked potato fries for supper. Then she helped Ian eat his supper when he got home.

Every morning she takes Ian’s phone and says “Babu?” so then I have to call my Dad so that she can hear his voice. She doesn’t quite get that she is supposed to talk to him, but when he says “Hi” she waves. Amelia is also getting quite good at repetition and we are often surprised at what she repeats/tries to say. On the weekend, for example, she was eating couscous and when Ian asked her if she wanted more couscous, she said “couscous.” Also, at the end of The Paper Bag Princess when Elizabeth says “you are a bum” she knows what is coming and will say “bum bum” in the right place.

Last weekend we had guests who brought their two boys (4 years and 8 months). Amelia had a blast running around after the older boy, playing hide and seek, etc. She is also very good at sharing her toys with others thus far, and doesn’t really seem to mind if another kid takes the toy she is playing with. When Maddy comes over she often will go get Maddy’s toys and try to give them to her. And she loves sharing her food and expects everyone else to do the same.

She’s still sleeping 12+ hours a night but seems to be up and down with her naps. Amelia still takes two naps a day, but they’re not always at the same time or the same length. I think she’ll be ready to go to one nap pretty soon. It’s just tough to know when and how to get her there. Luckily, if she doesn’t nap when I put her down she’ll usually just spend the time talking to herself or the stuffed sheep she keeps in her crib.

That photo is awesome in so many ways! She looks so determined with her walk and yet kinda old-lady like with that coat and hat. Love it!
