in the giving spirit

This year, at my brother’s request, our family is giving up the tradition of over-gifting, and instead will donate all the money we would normally spend on gifts for each other to a charity/charities. This’ll definitely make Christmas morning less hectic chez les Fischers, and I think we’ll all appreciate cutting back on the excesses. [...]

It was a packed sports weekend. First we saw the Habs thrash the Thrashers on Sat night. Good game, Huet played great (if Souray hadn’t scored on his own net, Huet would have had a shut-out) and the Atlanta goalie had some really nice saves too. Plus they honoured Serge Savard by retiring #18 to [...]

now reading!

see the cool sidebar widget which I can use to keep track of what I am reading, have read, and plan to read? Yeah, thanks to fiance-fish for hooking me up.
In other news, some good friends are playing at the Ultimate World Championships in Perth, Australia this week. Check out Dan’s blog, or the tournament [...]

kings & queens

I just finished Freddy & Fredericka by Mark Helprin. I quite enjoyed it. It was one of those, I-am-near-a-bookstore-so-I-will-buy-random-book, books. I hadn’t heard anything about it, but the blurb made it seem good, and it was somewhat hefty. I’m into heft. Takes longer to get through. It’s witty, fun, and the characters are quite amusing. [...]

Libraries R us?

So, i’m not really into the whole “social networking” thing. I’m not sure why, but I think it has something to do with enjoying seeing my friends face-to-face, and probably because I’m a little too old to have been caught up in the whole myspace, friendster etc craze. Nonetheless, I did read an article about [...]

Polymathwhatacle?

In response to Nudecybot’s recent post, I too would agree that The Code Book is one of the more fascinating non-fiction books I’ve ever read. Even I, reader of fiction, can appreciate a good non-fiction book now and then. However, I must point out that Cryptonomicon was also very interesting and fiction to boot.
Ah books. [...]

waterlogged

Ugh. Ultimate tournament this weekend was too wet, too muddy and too cold to justify actually being outside from 9:30 to 5:30 playing a sport. It must have rained 5 inches on Saturday. I can’t ever remember being so wet.
Anyway, some interesting reads in the NYT this weekend. Here’s an article about new technology where [...]

best of the best of the best, sir

Apparently the NYTimes asked prominent writers & thinkers to pick the best American novel in the past 25 years. Interestingly enough, Toni Morrison’s Beloved won. Surprising to me, however, was the number of books on the list I haven’t read. Time to get crackin’ apparently. Here’s the list.
Here’s A.O. Scott’s commentary on the process of [...]

atlas, what?

For anyone who has managed to get through Atlas Shrugged, by Ayn Rand, you may be shocked, horrified, displeased or befuddled about this little snippet of news. Faye Dunaway and Robert Redford one could see. But Mr. & Mrs. Smith? Let’s hope it’s all hype and no substance.
Speaking of Mr. Robert Redford, I’ve probably seen [...]

step up

I “officially” started stair training yesterday for this event. Luckily running stairs is good for ultimate training too. Went for a run with some of the storm ladies on the Mtn and then ran three sets of stairs when I got to them (about 15 mins into run). I expected to be more sore today, [...]
