Daddy’s girl

Amelia loves spending time with Ian, and yesterday they got to play together in the park. She tried to sneak rocks in her mouth, and he tried to stop her. Fun times all around!

This morning while we were reading Each Peach Pear Plum, I pointed out the drawing of the cat on one of the pages. Once we were done the book, Amelia flipped back to the page with the cat, put her finger on the cat, and said “cat.” I’m pretty sure she’s got that word down.

We started signing a few basic words last week (light, tree, more, food/eat, drink, yogourt, mama and dada). She hasn’t really done any of the signs yet, as far as we can tell, except “all done.” Once she seems to be finished eating, we’ll ask her if she is “all done” and make the sign for that. The past few days Amelia definitely does something with her hands/arms that is very similar to our “all done” sign. According to the signing book, babies often do an approximation of the sign they want to use and may not do exactly the same thing you are doing right away. So, we’re confident she is intentionally signing “all done.”

One sign and one word so far.

Amelia has recently been rejecting some veggies (broccoli, green beans, carrots) but still enjoys plenty of other foods. I still make them and offer them to her and more often than not she eats some anyway, because she forgets she doesn’t want them. I’ve started serving her what we eat for dinner some of the time, usually minus some of the seasonings. Yesterday Amelia had rice and fish baked with lemon, olive oil, and leeks. For lunch today she ate chicken, asparagus, hummus and some of the sautéed leeks, mushrooms, and spinach medley I made to go with my sandwich. And blueberries.

She’s also very good at pointing to what she wants, and if she doesn’t want something that we are offering (usually food-related) she will shake her head “no.” It’s amazing how well these little being are able to communicate! We met another little girl about Amelia’s age (and mom) at the park last week. Amelia seems to really like playing with her and always wants to give her kisses. It’s adorable. And it’s nice to have someone close by who has a kid the same age.

hmm…not sure if the rocks are a step up or down from the grass that she is usually trying to eat. Harder to get down, for sure.

I just finished my baby-signing class, it was fun. Now I have to practice the signs but I think Gwen is a little young, I hope I don’t forget them!
