Road Trip

Last weekend we had a wedding in Cape Cod. We left Thursday and took our time driving down through Vermont and New Hampshire. We stayed in Manchester over night (well, Amelia and I did. Ian met up with Scott and the two of them continued on to Providence, RI and the bachelor party). On Friday morning Amelia and I had room service (delicious) and then drove to Newport, RI where my mom had rented a house for two weeks.

Amelia loved seeing Gram all the time. On Saturday Ian and I left to go to the wedding around 2 pm, and Amelia and Gram hung out all afternoon. It was the first time we have left her alone at supper/bathtime/bedtime but she was great. She didn’t fuss at all and fell asleep without a problem and slept through the night.

On Sunday and Monday we went to the beach. Newport has some great beaches and Amelia just loved playing in the sand, and in the waves. She had no fear of the water, and kept wanting to walk deeper and deeper into the waves, even when they would splash her in the face. We also visited my grandmother and got to visit with a cousin of mine who I spent some time with when we both lived in NYC.

On Tuesday morning we drove up to Boston, and Ian worked while Amelia and I went to the Aquarium. She was fascinated with all the fish, sharks and other sea creatures. She also loved the penguins. We ended up staying overnight in Boston since Ian had more meetings on Tuesday, so Amelia and I found a great park right near the Aquarium and spent quite a bit of time exploring the tunnels and sandbox.

The entire trip Amelia had a bit of a cold, but she didn’t really let it get her down. The funny part about her having a cold came Tuesday night at the hotel. She was having trouble breathing because her nose was stuffy, so she kept waking herself up. Finally around 10 pm I tried to slip a blanket under her head to raise it up but she was wise to my tactics and woke up. At first I just lay down in the extra bed with her, but she kept flip-flopping around and wouldn’t fall back asleep. So, then I brought her into the bed with Ian and I.

She hasn’t slept in bed with us since she was really tiny (and then it was only in the early morning when I was too tired to put her back in the basinette). Needless to say, she was more than delighted to be included in the “big bed” but couldn’t settle down. She would lie quietly for a few minutes, then she’d roll over to one side or the other and start playing with our hair. Or she’d sit up, look around and then flop down on top of one of us. This went on for more than an hour. Ian and I had a really hard time not laughing. It was too funny. But finally I decided she should probably go back to her own crib, so she did and fell back asleep with minimal fussing.

On the nursing front, Amelia has given up the morning feed on her own. One morning in RI she didn’t seem interested so I didn’t offer, and she was fine. And it’s been that way ever since. As for the nighttime feeding, I still nurse her if I put her to sleep, but if Ian does, we skip nursing. And she doesn’t protest or seem to miss it. So, she’s essentially weaning herself. This morning we tried some milk in a cup, since there probably wouldn’t be any point in introducing a bottle now. She tried it a few times but didn’t really seem to like it. I guess we’ll keep trying, but she eats so much cheese and yogourt that I’m not worried she is missing out on protein.

She will be one next week!

Sounds like a really fun trip.
    One already!?
This is when I weaned LP completely ( I was back at work already so I was down to two feedings a day). Both stories are kind of similar… Suddenly, he wasn’t showing much interest and one day, I simply didn’t offer the breast. He never asked for it again. You’ve done an amazing job nursing her for a year!
