Amelia loves to look at the informational book we got from the hospital called From Tiny Tot to Toddler because there are plenty of pictures of babies in it. Anyway, we were flipping through it yesterday on our drive back from Vermont and I noticed a page about development that said babies should have 18 words or so in their vocabulary by 18 months. So I was curious and made a list of words that Amelia can say or sign clearly at 15 months (there are numerous others that are less clear that I did not include):
English: wawa (water), eye, belbow (elbow), coo-ee (cookie), Mama, Dada, Babu, Gran-gran (grandpere), dog, cat, Emma (our cat), up, down, bear, please, cheese, bum bum, soup, hot, snow, juice, bath, book, uh-oh, duck, baby, go, gain (again), key, car, bye bye, and “ma” for Amelia. I forgot blue and moon. And since I wrote this earlier today, she said the following: Tutu (from Chester), peas, corn, grilled cheese and bean (so now you know what we had for supper).
Signing: More, light, all done
French: Cou (neck), main (hand)
Phrases: “Cheese, please.” “Mama/Dada, up/down.” And she sometimes will sign “more” while she is saying “please.”
Sounds that she can make that are associated with animals or objects: “Caw caw” (birds), “whoo, whoo” (owl), “brrrr” when she looks or goes outside or feels a draft, woof woof (dog), zzzzz (when she knows someone/something is sleeping), rrrroar (for bears/lions), quack (duck), baaa (sheep), mooo (cow), vroom, vroom for moving vehicles. I am sure there are more that I can’t remember.
Body parts she can identify by pointing to when asked in English (and most in French as well): head, hair, eyes, nose, mouth, chin, teeth, tongue, neck, shoulders, knees, feet, toes, hands, elbows, bum, belly button, ears.
This post is for posterity more than anything else so if you’ve slogged through this far, congrats! You now have a chance to win a book! All you have to do is identify the source of the title without help (Google, search engines, etc.) Leave a comment with the answer and I’ll pick a winner at random and mail you a book that I think you might like. Happy New Year!
Wellllll, Bob yells that at people on the Biggest Loser when they are whining, but I don’t think that’s the answer you’re looking for. I’m thinking on it.
(I think) I know the answer… after cheating by using google. (It was too tempting. I needed to know!) I won’t write it here. : )
I had to look it up to double check too but I was right – comes from studying way too much Shakespeare in undergrad. Anyway, I just wanted to comment to say that I have a cookbook for children that is full of baby pictures and Moira goes nuts for it – I swear we look through it every day.
Melanie, I’ll take your word for it and award you the prize!
